“Helping to build something from its inception is rewarding, challenging, and personally fulfilling. It has enhanced my personal devotion and elevated my theological consciousness. The School of Religion is poised to develop new scholars and a community of caring, supportive faculty, administrators, and students.”
Rev. Dr. Kevin Swann
Hampton University is called ‘Home by the Sea’. The thing about homes is they provide shelter from outside elements. Homes are a place of refuge with nurturing and nourishing elements. Families, with various members, fill homes and bring character, laughter, and community into these spaces we call homes. We are intentionally in this space for such a time as this (Esther 4:14)
Dr. Candace Smith, PhD
“Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, ‘The arch of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice’. The sphere is the arch we are blessed to occupy is so small, by comparison, yet so infinitely important. What shall we do with this time given to us? Hampton University has sustained a rich tradition of providing opportunity, where obstacles have existed, since its inception in the nineteenth century (1868).”
Rev. Dr. Jonathan Augustine, PhD
“Text-driven, spirit-led, and culturally sensitive preaching are the sine qua nons of effective pastoral leadership. The pastor who sustains will approach the preaching moment passionate, imploring people to come to Christ. Ethos and pathos are necessary, but are less they be tethered to logos, the living Word of God."
Rev. Dr. Gaidi K. Burgess, PhD
“Hampton’s legacy, like Jesus, is one of “doing all things well”. This nurturing and empowering university has a great legacy of creating well-being through emancipatory education that has embedded our people to find our voices and enable a discerning ear. The School of Religion is and will be an extension of that tradition of doing all things well in relation to our community religiously and holistically.”
Rev. Dr. Brian J. Wells
“I keep coming back to the idea that love and devotion to Jesus Christ and His church truly unifies people form so many backgrounds and theological perspectives. It is both humbling and inspiring. I am asking so many questions, already learning so much. In a matter of weeks, the Lord has impressed upon me that what I thought was a job is turning out to be a calling. Soli Deo Gloria!”
Rev. Dr. B. J. Condrey, PhD
“Every moment is a possibility to experience God’s infinity. God’s love and wisdom are worthy to examine, study. Research, experience, and pursue. The study of religion for practical purposes makes these efforts valuable. Equipping religious leaders and congregations is essential for the current world and a future hope.”
Rev. Dr. Ken Walden, PhD
“The School of Religion comes at a time in history where the crossroads of Black theological thought hangs in upon the tree. This tree carries the Savior’s message of both redemption and retribution. As the hallowed grounds of Hampton University hold the Emancipation Oak, so does the School of Religion hold our work to provide freedom of theological thought that ensures the next generation liberation in the proclaimers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Rev. Dr. Raymond Johnson
“The School of Religion has a fountain bursting forth filled with profound knowledge and sound theology from those of us who have been called and purposed to give of ourselves to those who hunger and thirst for understanding and Truth. This diverse group of scholars, professors, pastors, and industry leaders have been charged to carry out this historic mission.”
